What guns can you own in the UK?
Many types of gun are banned in most of the UK but there are some exceptions, and some types of gun that you can own. Short barrelled or standard handguns, for example, are banned in England, Wales and Scotland but can be owned in Northern Ireland. For the guns you can own, however, you will require either a firearms license or a shotgun license issued by the police to possess such weapons. Single shot hunting rifles in any calibre can be owned but you will need a valid reason in order to possess such, and a firearms license. Shot guns, single, double or triple barrel and semi-automatic types (with a maximum of 2 shells in the magazine) can be owned, but you will require a shotgun license, again issued by your local police force. There are also limits on the size and number of pellets in the shotgun cartridges you can use. Large calibre fully automatic and semi-automatic assault type weapons are fully banned but you can own .22 calibre semi-automatic or .223 calibre and up single shot manual action variants, but again only if in possession of the appropriate license. Suprisingly, long barrel hand guns of all calibres can also be licensed but you will need a specific valid reason to posses such a weapon, such as vermin control.
